English Language Learners

Approximately 90% of the students tutored by BEST are Hispanic. Nearly three-quarters of those students have limited English proficiency. To address this, BEST makes every effort to recruit as many bilingual tutors meeting our high standards as possible. Currently, 63% of BEST tutors are bilingual. Although all tutoring is conducted in English, providing tutors from similar backgrounds helps facilitate tutor/ student trust. In additional, bilingual tutors are often better able to communicate with Spanish-speaking parents. This is an essential part of the tutoring process in that parents are able to reinforce the goals and objectives of the Student Learning Plan.

All written materials, including the registration, Student Learning Plan, notices and progress reports, will be available in both English and Spanish. Materials for parents are translated into other languages as needed.

Supplemental Education Services (SES) are tutoring or other supplemental academic enrichment activities that take place beyond the regular school day. Parents select services from California Department of Education approved Supplemental Education Service Providers. Students are eligible for services if they are attending a Program Improvement school (years 2-5) and are from low income families.
