BEST incorporates the use of standards-based diagnostics to identify areas of the student’s greatest need. This, combined with the use of research-based and California academic content standards-aligned curriculum, meets the federal No Child Left
Behind criteria for a research-based approach to education. Our
validated and tested tutoring methods have resulted in improved
academic success with our students.

The BEST process begins with a referral to the program by either a parent, teacher, member of the school staff, a social worker or other concerned adult. We then gather information on the student's academic achievement, special areas of concern, issues at school and various academic factors such as limited English language skills, special needs, risk of retention or others. After an assessment of the student and review of the teaching materials, a tutoring schedule is designed and certain student goals are set.

Since the sessions are individual and customized for each student, dramatic improvement in learning is consistently achieved. We report progress throughout the program and conduct a post-test assessment at its conclusion. BEST provides each tutor with the appropriate assessment tools and the NCLB guidelines.

All written materials, including the registration, Student Learning Plan, notices and progress reports, will be available in both English and Spanish. Materials for parents are translated into other languages as needed.

Supplemental Education Services (SES) are tutoring or other supplemental academic enrichment activities that take place beyond the regular school day. Parents select services from California Department of Education approved Supplemental Education Service Providers. Students are eligible for services if they are attending a Program Improvement school (years 2-5) and are from low income families.
